We are presently looking for a full time medical assistant or nurse to join our West Jefferson office!
Duties: Assist and work alongside the Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) with patient preparation (vital signs, testing, etc.), procedures, scribe duties, patient triage, scheduling, administration of oral, SQ and IM medications, monitor IVs, collaborate with other providers within the practice and community, navigate EMR and various other computer based systems for the purpose of helping to render care to our patients. You will become an integral part of the provider's daily routine and serve as the professional "go-between," separating patient communication/reception communication and the provider.
Education: Bachelor degree preferred (Nursing, Health Promotion, Exercise Science or related health oriented field). Associate and certificate considered with corresponding life experience. CNA only considered if coupled with other certifications (EMT-P, CPT, MOA, MA) or higher educational degree.
Experience: Strongly encourage internship (for rising Bachelor degree students) and then transition into the role. Excellent starting point for those considering NP or PA school. For non-Bachelor degree seeking/obtained candidates, a minimum of 2 years experience in related field required (pharmacy, phlebotomy, nursing assistant). Nurse applicants may include their clinical rotation time (1 year for LPN, 2 years for RN) as experience. NOTE: no medical office experience is necessary, but is highly recommended.
Desirable characteristics: Punctual, great sense of humor, high EQ, and seek to personally have an optimal state of health. Must have upbeat personality, work well with others and have life priorities in order. Must be a team player and someone who is a "go getter." This person must be well versed in medical terminology, communicate well in both spoken and written word, and be open to constructive criticism as he/she is molded into the new role. Our rotation is complex, aggressive, highly involved, and not intended for the faint of heart. We prefer our students to have completed at least one clinical rotation prior to entry. For NP students, we really prefer they use us for their last rotation, but young/middle or older adult rotations are also considered. We offer a tremendous amount of student autonomy with preceptor facilitation, really maximizing the hands on experience.
The waiting list is long for a clinical experience with our clinic. We have many inquiries by students from all over the US from many programs and an increasing number of persons who do not follow through to their obligation, thus short changing other students an opportunity. We have found this to be most problematic with students who inquire directly rather than through a clinical placement coordinator. As a result, we have modified our student acceptance plan to ensure we have compliance and we find the right student that is capable of our face paced and highly complex office setting.
Our priority is to universities or individuals willing to pay for their rotation as we feel this provides certainty of their participation. Many hours go into the preparation for their arrival and it is a lengthy process for us to obligate to the student presence over several weeks or months.
Students genuinely interested in a rotation should send a current photo, a letter of interest detailing why you wish to rotate with us (tell us about yourself, your family, scholastic or career goals and how AFH could intertwine among your plans), and a current CV in a single email as soon as possible. We will not accept student applications without this basic information. Slots are locked in 90 days in advance for students, but we accept a rolling enrollment. An educational agreement between AFH and your university must be in place prior to the start of your first clinical day.
Housing may be available for some approved students.
Of a side note, over the last decade, 80% of our providers have been hired following their student experience with AFH.

We are accepting applications for Health Promotion and Exercise Science interns. A Health Promotion or Exercise Science intern must be actively engaged in a Bachelor or Master level program and seeking educational credit through an accredited college or university. The intern must have nutrition, exercise, and wellness training. The intern will work alongside the providers in coordinating individual plans of lifestyle change and reinforce behavior modification efforts to facilitate outcomes that improve the health and well-being of the patient. The intern may also help to coordinate community health screening events and assist with marketing the health promotion services of weight management, diabetes education, smoking cessation planning, etc.
